Bilingual publication: Greek-English
The book approaches the people of Macedonia and Thrace in the pre-industrial era through the collections of the Folklife Museum. The material is divided into the following sections: Man and his life-cycle (birth-marriage-death), man and his home (dwelling: architectural features, house: interior space, diet, costume, weaving, kitchen and cooking utensils, dowry goods, washing), man and his trades (the farmer, the livestock breeder, the builder, the carpenter, the blacksmith, the potter, the drinks vendor, the saddler-carriage maker-carrier, the merchant, the tailor), man and his spiritual life (Orthodox Christian worship, popular cults, shadow theatre, music, games), man and memory (photography).
Each chapter contains material written by staff of the Museum and superb photographs of items which bring to life the thematic units of the book.
